Today saw the Last Chance Saloon competition at 3cs chess club. There were 36 players entered and we had an impressive 11 players enter from our two schools.
It was a tough day for all concerned (it appears a number of local schools have not had a qualifying competition and used LCS to get their best players through to the Megafinal). So most of our inexperienced kids were playing kids who have vastly more experience of competitions. In any case they all gave it their best and that is all we can ask. Each child played 6 matches.
Sarah Taylor made it through as the best yr 6 girl and she joins William Hardman-Elliot, Jack Ellidge, Kaden Davies, Ethan Lancaster, Jacob Hunt, Ella Keech, Adam Hamer and Alyssa Varlow (who warmed up with 3 out of 6 in a qualifiers competition today including an excellent performance against a year 9) at the Megafinal at Saddleworth School on Sat April 29th.
Alexia Clancy was oh so close to joining her and a draw in her last game again the impressive Dawn Supatan (won the last Chess in Schools Competition with 6 out of 6) would have seen her through but unfortunately she lost.
We had 4 players new to competitions, Tyler Timperley-Brogan performing best with 3 out of 6 with a couple of epic battles. Alex Hollingworth with 2.5/6 also performed admirably. Lawrence Mustafa (1.5) and Dylan Crothers (1) also got the hang of things late on. Fantastic experience for year 3 and 4s to be competing against yr 5 and 6 kids from other schools.
Of the rest, Eleanor Higginbottom (2.5), Aaron Varlow (2.5), Aaron Walkden (2.5) and Rowan Penney (2) all rescued some personal pride in the final 3 rounds after tricky starts to the competition. Jarrett Hayes unfortunately pulled out after 4 rounds on 2.5 when in with a chance of qualifying due to illness.
