Megafinal Results - 8 Qualifiers

Kids Section : Megafinal Results - 8 Qualifiers

I just wanted to let you know about the wonderful day our kids had yesterday at the Delancey Schools Megafinal at Saddleworth School.

I include a picture of the Motley Crew (it was liking herding cats!).

This was stage 2 of 4 of the National chess competition, 10 of our children from St Thomas’ and St James’ (plus 3 private tuitions) had qualified through stage 1 at an event in Ashton a few weeks ago. Around 100 kids, the best kids across the region turned up to try and qualify for stage 3 the Northern Gigafinal at Wright Robinson College in July.

The progress these children continue to make is incredible, demonstrated by the fact we had 2 qualify through the Megafinal 2 years ago, 6 through last year and this year this increased to 8.

Lucy Lowe was the best Under 10 Girl or ‘Suprema’ having won the Under 9 event last year.

James Cooper (our first ever year 3 in the Megafinal) incredibly finished 3rd in his age group qualifies (included year 4’s in his competition)

Lawrence Moustafa and Austin Butterworth finished joint 3rd in their age group, both only losing to England International Ben Newton (and giving him a decent game!)

Our other qualifiers were Ethan Lancaster, Alex Hollingworth (despite a significant nosebleed on the day!), Patrick Shaw, Dylan Crothers both who have qualified for the first time.

Unfortunately only William Hardman-Elliott and Ayaan Iltaf didn’t quite make it through to the next stage.

Each child is now down to the final 200 for their age groups Nationally 50,000 started in the competition across all ages in January.

I would also like to inform you in a couple of weeks-time I am starting a local Community Chess Club at Sholver and Moorside Community Centre (Monday nights starting June 3rd). This is aimed at children and parents/grandparents in the local area as a shared activity and lots of our local superstars are coming along to play and teach some of the local community how to play this wonderful game. The interest has been amazing including from some ex pupils from St Thomas’. I am really looking forward to this new venture.

A massive thankyou to all our Parents yesterday, supporting all the children from both schools for around 8 hours. They are absolute heroes!

It doesn’t end there today back to Ashton with some of the less experienced kids playing in their first competition (7 in total)
