3rd place for Oldham in ESPCA Under 11 County Championships North Zone

Amazing day for the Oldham under 11 town team. 3rd place overall across 20 boards, only beaten by Cheshire and North Wales and Nottinghamshire. Leicestershire and the Wirral also qualify. Rest are out. Grand final is Sat 28th March in Warwickshire when all the major southern counties will play.

Lawrence Moustafa (board 6) and Sithun De Silva (board 12) scored a magnificent 2.5 out of 3. Paddy Shaw (board 7) and Dylan Crothers (board 13) both scored 0.5 out of 3 but 3 fantastic games against some of the more difficult counties. A fabulous medal and certificate for all the team.

Queen of Katwe - Disney chess film

It seems apt at this point having raised funds for African Xplorers trip to Kenya with a chess competition to recommend a fairly recent Disney film called Queen of Katwe.
It's about a girl who lives in poverty in Uganda and gets the opportunity to learn how to play chess and her struggles to compete in competitions.
Think the kids would enjoy it (and maybe the adults as well).
As an aside one of the kids who starred in the film died yesterday aged just 15. How very sad.
The following link gives you some detail about the film.
